Why Learn an instrument?

Extensive research has shown that playing music helps your child’s brain development more than almost any other activity. For children in particular, the skills they acquire from learning music contribute directly to development in language, literacy, numeracy, creativity, fine motor co-ordination, concentration, self-confidence, social skills, teamwork and self-discipline. Band provides a perfect opportunity to develop these skills in a fun and creative environment.

In addition to the joy that learning music brings, being proficient on a musical instrument opens up a range of opportunities for your child, including: scholarships and part scholarships at independent schools; community bands; graded music exams; music competitions and festivals. Music flourishes at our local high schools which all offer extensive band programs.

The Forest High School has a long standing reputation for excellence in music with its Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Stage Bands.

Both Balgowlah Boys and Mackellar Girls offer highly competitive “Talented Music Programs” by audition only for Year 7 entry, with Mackellar’s band program offering Performance Band, Concert Band, Big Band, Stage Band, Jazz Improvisation Groups, Rock Band and Orchestra.

Further Manly Selective Campus’ Band Program sees over a quarter of the students involved in the myriad of bands across their wind stream, jazz stream and string stream including Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Swing Band, Stage Band, Big Band, Jazz Orchestra, String Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra.

With so many future opportunities awaiting - now is the time to jump onboard for band!
